Find a Themed SailingThemed River Cruises: A Regular Cruise With a Passion Added
Themed river cruises take an ordinary week on the Rhine, Danube or Rhone and fold a passion into it. On a designated departure you might find a winemaker hosting tastings in the lounge, a beer expert leading you through Cologne’s brewhouses, a conductor giving talks on Mozart before a concert in Vienna, or a golf concierge collecting your clubs at the gangway. The ship, the cabins and the towns are the same as any other week. What changes is the depth of the experience.
River Cruise Special explains which themes exist, who runs them, how they work and how to choose one. We use facts published by the lines themselves and link to their pages. Themes, hosts and dates change from season to season, so treat this as a guide to what to look for and let our cruise advisors check the current sailings for you.

Who Runs Themed Sailings?
Several river lines publish dedicated themed programs. AmaWaterways lists wine, beer, music and golf among its interests, with hosted departures on European rivers. Emerald Cruises lists culinary, wine and combined beer-and-wine journeys on its specialty page, including departures in 2027. Other lines build themes into regular itineraries rather than designating special sailings — tulip-season trips in Holland are a good example, offered by several lines each spring.
| Theme | What is usually added | Typical rivers |
|---|---|---|
| Food and wine | Wine host on board, tastings, cellar visits, paired dinners, cooking demonstrations | Rhine, Moselle, Rhone, Bordeaux rivers, Douro |
| Golf | Rounds at courses near the river, transport, club care | Danube, Seine (on the program we found) |
| Beer | Beer host, tastings, brewery visits, beer-and-food dinners | Rhine, Danube, Dutch and Belgian waterways |
| Music | Concerts, lectures, musical tours ashore | Danube above all |
| Tulips and gardens | Visits to bulb fields and spring gardens | Dutch and Belgian waterways |

Is a Theme Worth Choosing?
A themed sailing is a good choice when the theme is something you would seek out anyway. A wine lover on a wine departure gets access, explanations and tastings that would take days to arrange independently. A golfer on a golf program plays courses that are hard to book as a visitor. A music lover hears performances in places built for that music.
If your interest is mild, a regular departure may suit you just as well, and it might cost less or give you more choice of dates. Our how to choose page walks through the questions to ask.

Themed River Cruise Questions
What are themed river cruises?
They are regular river cruises with a special-interest program added on selected departures: a wine expert on board, a beer host, a chef, a musician or a golf program, plus tastings, talks and visits ashore built around the theme.
Do themed sailings cost more?
Some themes are included in the cruise fare on designated departures; others, such as golf, are paid add-ons. It depends on the line. Ask for the inclusions in writing when you get a quote.
Do I have to join every themed event?
No. Themed activities are offered alongside the normal program. Travelers who are not interested in the theme simply follow the usual tours.
Can a group or club charter a themed river cruise?
Yes, groups sometimes book blocks of cabins or whole ships around an interest. Our sister site Group River Cruises explains how group bookings work.
